Milling and CNC machining of carbon fiber

The evaluation of CNC machining begins not with the machine, but with the input data. The file describes the geometry, but the material, thickness, quantity, edge and acceptance criteria must be recorded separately.

Minimum set of input data

  • DXF for flat contour or suitable 3D model/drawing;
  • units of measurement and reference gauge;
  • material and thickness of the workpiece;
  • number of parts and layout tolerance;
  • holes, grooves, radii, chamfers and critical dimensions;
  • edging, marking and packaging requirements;
  • acceptance criteria and purpose of the part.

What does the file provide, and what does the technologist decide

A drawing or model describes the required geometry of a part, but is not a ready-made machine control program. The technologist determines the bases, fixation of the workpiece, sequence of operations, tools and mode after checking the material, thickness, equipment and requirements for the result.

DXF is usually useful for planar paths: it should make the units, closed lines, and the purpose of layers clear. STEP helps convey volumetric geometry, but critical dimensions, tolerances, and edge requirements are still best documented in a drawing or specification. The file name does not replace the revision and part number.

Carbon milling in the context of this page means the production processing of a confirmed workpiece. The article is not an instruction for independent work on unprepared equipment.

Composite processing dust and waste require manufacturing controls. Ventilation, dust removal, protective equipment and waste management are determined by the material, safety data sheet and site-specific rules.

What is checked in the file

Before assessment, the closedness of contours, duplicate lines, scale, minimal elements and the relationship of holes with basic dimensions are checked. If the geometry is ambiguous, production should request clarification rather than silently choose an option.

Material and processing technology

The same contour in different materials or thicknesses is not the same task. Workpiece fixation, tools, order of operations and edge control are determined by the technologist after confirmation of the source material.

Example of a calculation kit

For a flat plate, submit DXF in agreed units, PDF with overall and critical dimensions, material and thickness designation, quantity, orientation requirement and explanation of the purpose of the part. If the workpiece must be provided by the performer, this is written explicitly; if the customer’s material, indicate its condition and documents.

Separately lists holes and seating areas that affect assembly, as well as the expected edge condition and subsequent operation. For a new part or series, it is wise to select a pilot: after measuring and trying it on, not only the file, but also the acceptance criterion is adjusted.

Problem statement errors

  • send file without units and control size;
  • do not specify material and thickness;
  • consider all lines of the file as a cutting contour;
  • do not highlight critical sizes and bases;
  • order a batch before approval of the control part.

The feasibility of small holes, bridges and tolerances is confirmed after file and material inspection by production.

Frequently asked questions

What file format is needed?

For a flat contour, DXF is usually convenient; for a three-dimensional part or assembly, STEP and a drawing may be needed. The exact kit is confirmed by task.

Is DXF enough?

No. You need material, thickness, units, quantity, edge requirements and control dimensions.

Is it possible to calculate the price without a file?

Preliminary discussion is possible, but exact estimate depends on geometry, material, quantity and requirements.

How to take into account the direction of the sheet?

If orientation is important, it is clearly indicated on the drawing or layout map and confirmed before launch.

Is a test part needed?

For a new geometry, critical size or series, a control part helps align process and acceptance.

Are milling and CNC machining the same thing?

In requests, these words can describe similar processing operations, but the exact route is determined by the technologist based on geometry, material, equipment and the required result.

Need a choice for a specific task?

Submit dimensions, load, quantity and available files. CORDTEX will clarify the missing data and return with the relevant material or production route.
