How to Choose Carbon Sheet Thickness

The thickness of the carbon sheet is a result of a design decision, and not a characteristic that can be assigned only by the length of the part. We need a load diagram, supports, cutouts and permissible deformation.

Why is there no universal table

Two laminates of the same size may perform differently due to support, load direction, openings, and laminate structure. A table without these conditions creates false precision and should not replace design verification.

How to mentally visualize the work of a plate

The plate does not work on its own: the force enters through the support or fastener, passes through the material and exits in another part of the assembly. The larger the free span and the more complex the contour, the more important is not only the overall dimensions, but also the position of the holes, narrow jumpers and width transitions.

Allowable deflection is a requirement for how much a part can change shape under load, even if it does not collapse. For a mechanism, optics or electronics, the deformation limit may be more important than the load limit. It should be specified numerically or through a verifiable functional condition.

Thickness is one of the options parameters, but layer direction, material, supports and geometry all work together. Therefore, increasing the thickness does not automatically correct an unknown structure or a weak attachment.

Input data

  • outline and dimensions;
  • diagram of supports and fastenings;
  • load, its direction and repeatability;
  • permissible deflection or other criterion;
  • holes, grooves, radii and narrow bridges;
  • environment, temperature and contact with other parts;
  • material structure and direction of layers;
  • calculation, prototype or test method.

Example without random thickness substitution

Imagine a mounting plate with several posts and a cutout for a component. First, the contour and attachment points are fixed, then the mass of components and possible directions of forces. After this, a condition is set: for example, the node must preserve the assembly geometry in the agreed verification script.

The designer highlights spans between posts, cutout edges, narrow areas, and load transfer openings. For each acceptable material, it generates a variant of structure and thickness, checks it by calculation or prototype and compares weight, processing and margin according to the criteria. The final figure appears as a result of the check, and is not taken from a similar card.

In the application, the supplier is not given internal calculation assumptions, but unambiguous geometry, the selected option or input data for selection, quantity and acceptance criteria. If the decision is still preliminary, this is noted before ordering the series.

Sheet thickness for FPV

For an FPV frame, additional considerations include layout, motor beams, post holes, mounting areas, component protection, and element replacement capabilities. The diagonal of the device itself does not determine the thickness of the plates.

Errors

  • copy the thickness of a similar part without checking;
  • do not set permissible deflection;
  • ignore cutouts and fasteners;
  • compensate for unknown structure with thickness only;
  • consider the trial sample unnecessary for the new circuit.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to select the thickness according to the length of the plate?

No. We need supports, load, width, cutouts, material structure and permissible deformation.

Is thicker always better?

No. Thickness affects mass, component geometry and processing. The solution must fulfill the requirements without undue overhead.

How to account for holes?

It is necessary to specify the diameter, position, edge distances, fasteners and load transfer; local zones are checked separately.

Do you need a calculation?

The higher the risk and cost of failure, the more important the calculation and verification by prototype or test.

Can I order multiple thicknesses for the dough?

Opportunity and conditions are confirmed based on the current assortment and application.

Where can I see the available sheets?

Current formats, thicknesses, prices and availability are in the commercial category of carbon sheets.
