Carbon rods for your application

In the current CORDTEX structure, rods are presented as a supply according to technical brief. There is no confirmed fixed nomenclature, so the choice is based on the function of the element and the input data.

When considering a rod

Rod is a solid long form. It is considered for rods, axles, frame elements and other components when the geometry and method of connection are appropriate for the task. The purpose does not automatically confirm suitability: load, length and knot are required.

What does "solid shape" mean?

The rod has no internal passage, so its geometry and mass are distributed differently than a tube of the same outside diameter. This does not automatically make the rod preferable: for each option, bending, tension or compression, length between supports, stability and joint design are checked.

The rod often enters the assembly through a clamp, insert, or adapter. It is in this zone that the load transfers between materials, so the contact length, surface preparation and processing tolerance must be determined by the design and technology. Simply stating the diameter does not describe the assembly.

For the novice designer, a safe sequence is to first draw the element along with supports and connections, then indicate the direction of force and the result criterion, then discuss diameter, material and test piece.

What to include in the technical brief

  • diameter and length;
  • element purpose and load diagram;
  • connection method and contact areas;
  • operating conditions;
  • quantity and batch requirements;
  • dimensional and functional acceptance criterion.

What difference does the choice of bar make?

FactorQuestionWhat you can't assume in advance
Working lengthWhat is the distance between load transfer pointsThat the total length is equal to the design span
LoadIs there bending, stretching, compression or a combinationThat one diameter fits all occasions equally
SupportsAre the ends free and is there a clamp or hinge?That the method of fastening does not affect the result
ConnectionHow force enters and exits the barWhat adapter can be selected after the material
ControlWhat dimensions and functional conditions are checkedThat visual inspection is sufficient for any task

If at least one of these points is unknown, it is marked as a design issue. The supplier can help clarify the delivery form and item documents, but should not silently assign the customer's calculation scheme.

How to check the solution

Geometric compatibility and load transfer are first checked. Then there are restrictions on deflection, stability, end finishing and assembly. For a new or critical design, the solution is confirmed by calculation and sample.

How to describe a task to a supplier

Instead of asking “need a carbon rod,” specify what the element connects, what its working length is, where the supports are, whether it needs to transfer tension, compression, or bending, and what is considered an acceptable result. Add outer dimension limitation, end sketch, quantity and operating conditions.

If the task is at the prototype stage, it is useful to note this separately. A small milestone and measurement list can then be agreed upon without passing off the trial delivery as confirmation of the entire design. For re-ordering, the approved sample, batch documents and the agreed acceptance criterion are recorded.

What to avoid

  • publish or select a non-existent stock size;
  • consider the rod and tube interchangeable in outer diameter;
  • do not describe a clamp, insert, or threaded adapter;
  • order a series without a control sample for a new geometry.

Frequently asked questions

What diameters are available?

The Autonomous Technical Center does not have a confirmed stock range of rods. Diameter, length and batch are specified according to the technical brief.

Is the rod stiffer than the tube?

Without the same task, geometry, mass, structure and length, such a comparison is incorrect.

Is it possible to machine the end of a bar?

The required processing is described in the statement of work and is confirmed before ordering, along with tolerances and controls.

What is more important: diameter or length?

Both parameters work in conjunction with the support pattern, load and connection; It is impossible to choose one of them in isolation.

Can I order a small batch?

Quantity and minimum delivery conditions are confirmed by a commercial response to a specific request.

Need a choice for a specific task?

Submit dimensions, load, quantity and available files. CORDTEX will clarify the missing data and return with the relevant material or production route.
