Materials Oriented reinforcement

Unidirectional and multiaxial fabrics

UD- and multiaxial materials allow control of reinforcement directions, but require a clear load pattern and layer map. The number of axles or harness size does not replace structural calculations.

How the approaches differ

In a unidirectional material, the bulk of the reinforcement is oriented predominantly along one axis. The multiaxial structure combines several specified directions. The woven fabric, in turn, is formed by the interweaving of threads and has a different geometry of their passage.

No one approach is universally best. The choice depends on the direction of loading, the shape of the part, the need to hold the web during installation, the available process and surface requirements. A complex part can use different types of reinforcement together.

The article explains the logic behind selecting groups. Actual directions, density, width, stitching and fiber type are confirmed by specific material documentation.

Comparison for problem statement

GroupMain questionCommon error
UnidirectionalAre the principal load axis and layer boundaries known?Consider the material to work equally in all directions
MultiaxialWhat directions are needed and how are they collected?Select by number of axes only
WovenDo you need blade stability and bi-directional operation?Evaluate weave pattern only
Combo PackHow do the layers complement each other?Add directions without calculation function

Link material to load path

Before selecting reinforcement, determine the load application points, supports, section changes, holes and connections. The direction of the grain is related to the way the force passes through the part, and not to the ease of cutting or the visual axis of the model.

In areas of openings, transitions and local loads, a simple longitudinal layer may not be sufficient. The designer defines additional directions, overlaps and layer boundaries. The Technical Center does not create a layer map without input data and calculations.

For a beginner project, it is useful to plot the main forces and supports on the sketch. Even a simplified diagram helps a specialist understand what issues need to be closed before choosing a position.

Manufacturability and control

The oriented reinforcement must be maintained during cutting, transfer and forming. Fiber misalignment, folds, local tears or incorrect angles can change the result. Therefore, the cutting map and direction markings are part of production preparation.

When coordinating the process, the shape of the equipment, material fixation, matrix, air removal and control of the resulting package are taken into account. For a series, reproducibility is tested, not just one successful sample.

  • indicate the direction of the material in the drawing;
  • match the orientation of each layer;
  • determine the permissible displacement and control method;
  • check cutting at actual width;
  • record the markings of workpieces and batches.

Data set for request

Submit geometry, load pattern, layer map or its development status, process, workpiece size, quantity and document requirements. If only test material is required, indicate the sample program and comparison criterion.

Commercial position selection is performed separately for the uniaxial and multiaxial categories. Transferring parameters between them without documentation is not allowed.

Frequently asked questions

UD means that all fibers are directed exactly the same?

The exact structure of a particular material is confirmed by its documentation; UD describes the dominant direction of reinforcement.

Multiaxial material replacing layer map?

No. The directions, material position, and function of each layer in the part must be determined.

Is it possible to orient the material along the long side of the part?

Only if this is consistent with the load path and design decision.

Why mark the direction when cutting?

To maintain the design orientation of the workpiece when transferring and assembling the package.

Where can I see available positions?

In confirmed categories of unidirectional and multiaxial fabrics.

When is a trial package needed?

For new geometry, process, material combination, or critical repeatability requirements.

Need a choice for a specific task?

Submit dimensions, load, quantity and available files. CORDTEX will clarify the missing data and return with the relevant material or production route.
