Prepreg or dry fabric: what to choose

Prepreg and dry fabric are not two articles of the same level, but different ways to organize reinforcement and the introduction of a binder. You need to choose the entire production route, including storage, equipment, control and team competencies.

Main difference

Dry fabric enters the process as a reinforcing base. The binder is introduced separately by a selected method, so production manages resin preparation, impregnation, air removal and subsequent curing. In a prepreg, the binder system has already been introduced into the reinforcement in a state controlled by the manufacturer.

This difference changes purchasing, storage, cutting, cleanliness requirements, running time, tooling and supervision. Prepreg should not be considered simply a “comfortable resin fabric” and dry fabric should not be automatically considered a simpler option.

Specific modes, shelf life and permissible time outside storage conditions are taken only from the documentation of the selected prepreg. The general article deliberately does not provide universal temperatures and cycles.

When to Consider Prepreg

Prepreg is considered when a facility can meet storage, traceability and process cycle requirements and the project requires controlled material preparation and a repeatable process. The decision must take into account not only the price of the roll, but also the infrastructure, consumables, tooling, supervision and training of personnel.

If the equipment or accounting discipline is not ready, the potential benefit of the material may be lost. Before a batch, a full trial cycle from receiving the batch to inspecting the part, including recording the time and handling conditions, is useful.

For purchase, indicate the reinforcing base, binder system, format, required documentation and the planned process. Any replacement of a position requires verification of compatibility with the approved cycle.

When to Consider Dry fabric

Dry fabric is suitable for processes where the plant consciously controls the individual binder and impregnation. This may be important for large equipment, other logistics, the selected infusion regimen, or the need to customize the package composition and process.

Flexibility does not mean lack of requirements. All components, mixing, working time, placement, vacuum bag or other compaction method, and final curing must be controlled. The result depends on the skill of the operator and the stability of the entire procedure.

If the task starts with the first part, compare both routes at the process level: what operations are performed, where an error can occur, what is measured, and how much it costs to correct the defect.

How to make a decision

  • describe the geometry, series and requirements for the finished part;
  • document available equipment and qualifications;
  • compare storage, preparation, molding and control;
  • calculate the full cycle, and not just the cost of the material;
  • produce comparable samples along approved routes;
  • decide on measurable results and repeatability.

To make a valid comparison, the samples must perform the same function. You cannot compare materials only by name or number of layers without taking into account the structure and the resulting laminate.

If production is planned by an outside contractor, request confirmation of the available process, input requirements, and controls. The availability of specific equipment should not be assumed based solely on the general wording of the service.

Selection errors

Typical mistakes are to ignore the prepreg cold chain, consider dry fabric a complete system, transfer the cycle of one item to another and compare only the purchase price. It is also dangerous to start a series without a trial cycle and a fixed acceptance criterion.

The correct choice is documented as a combination of material, process, equipment, control and responsibility. The commercial application then becomes part of a managed project, rather than an attempt to solve the technology with a single part change.

Frequently asked questions

Does prepreg always produce a better part?

No. The result depends on the suitability of the material, storage, installation, equipment, cycle and control.

Is dry fabric cheaper?

You need to compare the entire production cycle, including binders, consumables, labor, scrap and inspection.

Can one cycle be used for different prepregs?

No without documented evidence. Mode refers to a specific system and position.

Is infusion applied to prepreg?

Vacuum infusion generally describes the introduction of a binder into a dry reinforcement. The prepreg process is considered separately.

What should I include with my request?

Geometry, series, layer map, available equipment, surface requirements, inspection and documentation.

When is a trial cycle needed?

With a new position, technology, geometry, equipment or transition to another production.
