Carbon-fiber composite or fiberglass

Carbon and fiberglass are not single materials with fixed properties, but families of composite systems. A valid comparison starts with the same part function and the same test criteria.

What exactly is being compared

First, the reinforcing base, binder, layer structure, proportion of materials, technology and geometry are determined. Only after this can options be compared in terms of weight, stiffness, durability, cost and production risk.

Carbon and fiberglass in simple words

In colloquial speech, carbon fiber is often referred to as carbon fiber, a composite with carbon reinforcement. Fiberglass uses glass reinforcement. In both cases, the result is created not only by the fibers, but also by the binder, layer structure, technology, geometry and workmanship.

When to choose carbon fiber

CFRP is considered when its use is related to a specific design purpose and supported by calculation, prototype or testing. This word cannot replace the requirements for the structure of the material and the quality of workmanship.

When to choose fiberglass

Fiberglass is considered when it performs the function of a part with accessible technology and understandable economics. The decision can be justified for a single unit, even in a structure where other elements are made of carbon fiber.
